EMDR is an incredibly powerful therapeutic technique used successfully in the treatment of severe stress, anxiety and trauma.
Primarily it's been used in treating trauma survivers - from accident and rape victims, to war veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress. But it can also be used wherever there's a severe emotional response, such as with severe anxiety, phobias and anger.
EMDR is a technique involves a series of eye movements, tapping or alternating sounds while focusing on a specific series of thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Depending on the nature of the trauma, extremely strong emotions can be released and processed, so a session involving EMDR can make for a very intensive therapy session, especially when working with an animal distantly.
When working with animals in person, I've found that using sounds and gentle taps I've been able to work directly on the animal. Distantly, I connect emotionally with the animal's energy and whatever experience we're working on together, identify the peak point of trauma and then do EMDR on myself as a surrogate.
